Spot the difference

Hello I'm back and I brought along a new topic the topic is how to spot the differences between a male and female killer whale. Now their are several ways to tell the differences I'll start with the easiest first, the easiest are the dorsal and pectrol fins. The male Orca has a taller dorsal fin that reaches a height of six feet and it has a triangular shape. The female Orca however, has a dorsal fin nearly half that size and is more sickle shaped. Then there is the male Orcas longer more broader pectoral fins they are a great way to tell the difference however, there is a problem this differences are   only found in older more mature males so young ones can be mistaken for females. Now that's a big problem but, wait their is a way to tell the difference you see on the orcas under belly near the tail end their is a white pattern. The females pater is more oval shaped and contains three black dots the biggest dot is the vaginitis and the other two are nipples used to nurse young, while the males pattern is more enlongated and contains only a single black slit this is where the penis is located. This difference can only be seen when the orca jumps from the water, spy hops, or it's on it's back. Now time for the final differences this are differences that can only be found in males, the first and most commonly seen is their dorsal fin drooping to one side their is a lot of controversy over the subject I will go into that in my next blog post and the last difference is that aging males tail flukes bend down. Now that is the end of this blog post and I want to hear what think also if you what to know something about orcas ask and I'll give you your answer.

orcas folklore

In my last post I said I would talk about killer whale folklore and I think have found the right one for you guys, the legend I chose comes from the Haida people. The Haida legend is called "Wolf and the Sea", as you can imagine from the title wolves do play a role in the story okay lets skip the details and go to the story. One day a man found two wolf pups on the beach he took them home and raised them when the pups had grown, they would swim out into the ocean and kill a whale. They would take the dead whale and bring it to shore for the man to eat, they did this every day which eventually led to a waste of food and horrid smells. Then the great above person saw the waste and became angered so it decided to create a fog stranding the wolves in the sea forever however, the wolves begin to change they become Killer whales. I hope you liked this legend as much as I did you see I liked this myth because, it gave multiple references to wolves and their relation to the killer whales and a theme of how over hunting can lead to great change and problems. Well goodbye and come back next time.

In my studies of the Killer whale I will be looking at things like it's anatomy, diet, life cycle, the way it hunts and the differences between the genders and pods. I hope that my search will give me loads of valuable information I also hope I can find a mentor who knows a good bit of info about Killer whales or has trained/worked with them as to provide me with someone who can help me better understand them due to there real life experiences. In the beginning I began to research different things about the Killer whale and wrote into a notebook.
